Counting & Number Activity Using Popsicle Stick

Interactivity is the key to making children learn how to count and spell out the names of numbers effectively. Simply using Popsicle sticks and cardboard rolls for counting numbers, children can enjoy learning how to count in an interactive and fun way:

Suitable For:

This activity is designed for young children of all ages, as they can learn how to count by inserting the Popsicle sticks into the slots in the cardboard rolls and writing the respective number against each cardboard roll.

What You’ll Learn:

1. Number Recognition – Kids can master number recognition when they complete the activity several times by writing the numbers they have counted in the number of slots on each of the cardboard rolls against each cardboard roll

2. Cognitive Skills – The moment children engage themselves in this activity, they will be able to recognize the shapes of the numbers and thus, their geometrical and shape recognition skills will also get enhanced.

3. Fine Motor Skills – Participating in activities involving physical action can enhance the fine motor skills of children. As this activity involves sticking Popsicle sticks into the cardboard rolls and marking the numbers on the sticky cello tape, the fine motor skills of children also develop quite well in progression with time.

4. Adaptability – Upon completing this activity, children will be able to easily adapt to different learning situations since it involves learning how to count along with the acquisition of other mathematical skills, including geometry and shape recognition.

5. Problem Solving – Engaging in puzzle game activities that involve Popsicle sticks to count, recognize numbers, and match certain patterns can help enhance the problem-solving skills of children.

Material Required:

1. Popsicle Sticks: Keep at least 21 Popsicle sticks ready for this game activity

2. Cardboard Sheets: Keep at least one cardboard sheet ready to serve as a cardboard base, and 1 more to be cut into cardboard strips

3. Glue: To stick the cardboard rolls to the cardboard base

4. Cardboard Strips: Cut the second cardboard sheet into at least six cardboard strips so that you can use them as cardboard rolls for this game activity

5. Scissors: To cut the cardboard sheet into rolls and punching holes in each of the cardboard rolls.

6. Sticky Cello Tape: To stick a strip of sticky cello tape onto the number inputting boxes against each cardboard roll on their right-hand side.

7. Whiteboard Markers: To mark the borders around each of the slots in the cardboard rolls and writing numbers on the sticky cello tape.

The Procedure for Preparing:

1. Prepare the cardboard base –

Keep a cardboard sheet ready for use as a cardboard base for this game activity

2. Prepare the cardboard rolls from the cardboard strips –

Prepare at least six cardboard rolls by sticking together the ends of loose cardboard strips

3. Roll the cardboard strips into cardboard rolls –

Take the cardboard strips and stick their ends together, and stick each one of them one below the other on the cardboard base with glue.

4. Use the sticky cello tape to prepare an editable surface –

Cut the sticky cello tape into one big editable strip and paste it onto the right-hand side of the cardboard base, beneath which you should write numbers before sticking the sticky cello tape onto it.

5. Mark the borders of the slots and write numbers –

Use the markers to mark the borders of each one of the slots on the cardboard rolls and write numbers on the cardboard base against each of the cardboard rolls on their right-hand side.

6. Keep the Popsicle sticks ready –

Keep the Popsicle sticks by the side of the cardboard base for your kids to participate in the counting and number activity.

7. Encourage your children to participate –

Ask your children to insert the Popsicle sticks into the slots on the left-hand side of the cardboard base according to the number written on the right-hand side of the cardboard base, and write the numbers on the sticky tape yet again for practice after erasing them with a duster. Encourage them to count the number of Popsicle sticks they have inserted into each of the cardboard rolls and ask them to spell out the numbers.

8. Review and Repeat –

Review the activity-based performance of your children each time they complete it and make them repeat the same till they have mastered the requisite skills through this counting and number activity using Popsicle sticks.

Sticking the Popsicle sticks into the slots on top of each of the six cardboard rolls and writing the number of Popsicle sticks they have inserted into the slots on the right-hand side of the cardboard rolls can challenge children mentally and help them learn counting and numbering better.
