Shape Recognition Match Activity

Shape recognition match is one of the best ways to learn how to match shapes with one another. The reason behind this is that when children interact with interactive learning materials, they tend to grasp the various concepts much better than when they try learning using traditional learning materials:

Suitable For:

This activity is designed for children between two and four years of age, as they can learn how to match designs, shapes, and patterns quickly. Simple to prepare, this activity can help enhance the various skills of children.

What You’ll Learn:

1. Shape Recognition – Children can easily master shape recognition when they engage in the shape recognition match activity. The more often they match the shapes according to the shape templates, the better their shape recognition skills.

2. Geometrical Skills – Kids can learn to comprehend geometrical shapes better when they participate in the shape recognition match activity. That way, they will also learn to name newer shapes they come across as they spell out the same.

3. Fine Motor Skills – When children take part in the shape recognition match activity, they will have acquired fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. The reason behind this is that the activity involves physical activity, coordination, and precision.

4. Persistence and Patience – Upon completing this activity several times in a row, they will learn patience and how to be persistent when they adopt a trial-and-error method to learn shape recognition.

5. Socializing – Engaging in shape-matching activities together with other children of their age can help your children learn how to socialize with others in the future.

Material Required:

1. Cardboard Base: Keep at least one big cardboard sheet ready for preparing the base for this activity.

2. Cardboard Sheets: Keep at least one cardboard sheet for preparing the shape templates and another one for creating the individual shapes themselves

3. Button Tacks: Have at least nine button tacks ready for placing the individual shapes (cardboard) on top of each of the spaces reserved for placing the shapes to render a 3D effect to the cardboard-based shapes.

4. Scissors: To cut the cardboard sheets into an arch-shaped base, cut out the individual shapes, and the shape template.

5. Whiteboard Markers: To color the different shape templates, the individual shapes, and mark the borders of the shape templates, the cardboard base, and the individual shapes.

The Procedure for Preparing:

1. Prepare the cardboard base –

Keep a cardboard sheet ready for use as a cardboard base for this game activity. Just make sure you cut it in the shape of an arched doorway. Draw at least 9 boxes below the arched part of the cardboard base for the shape recognition match activity.

2. Prepare the shape templates –

Prepare at least two shape templates to let your children match the shapes according to the same by marking individual shapes of different colors and boxes to enclose them. Cut the other cardboard sheet into two small shape templates that can easily fit into the arched part of the cardboard base, and color each of the shapes inside them in the same colors as the ones assigned to the individual shapes.

3. Cut out the individual shapes –

Take the cardboard sheet and cut it out into individual shapes, after which you should give each shape a different color using the multi-colored whiteboard markers.

4. Add button tacks to the different boxes on the cardboard base –

Pin the nine button tacks to the nine different boxes that have been drawn on the cardboard base so that your children can place the individual shapes according to the shape placements on the two different shape templates.

5. Encourage your children to participate –

Ask your children to carefully study the two shape templates and place the individual shapes according to the placement of the shape elements of the same on top of the button tacks placed in the nine boxes of the cardboard base.

6. Review and Repeat –

Review the activity each time your children complete it and make them repeat it until they have mastered it. The more your kids participate in the activity, the better their shape recognition and other related skills will be.

Sticking the individual shapes on the button tacks will render the activity a 3D effect while encouraging your children to learn more in a fun and interactive way. Since engaging in a shape recognition and matching activity can be more engaging as compared to rote learning, it is an effective way to learn things faster.
