Smooth Blending: From “Buh-Luh” to “Bl”
Kids often sound out “/b/… /l/… /ŭ/ /g/” for “plug.” They know the sounds, but blending them smoothly is challenging. This Find Beginning Consonant Blends Worksheet helps kids hear, practice, and recognize blends.
Why Blends Are About Hearing, Not Just Seeing
Seeing ‘s’ and ‘t’ isn’t enough. Kids need to hear /st/ as one sound to read fluently.
This worksheet strengthens:
- Auditory Skills: Hear blends as one unit.
- Articulation: Practice mouth movements for smooth blends.
- Decoding Fluency: Move from slow sounding-out to automatic reading.
- Spelling Prep: Hear blends clearly to spell them correctly.
How to Use This Worksheet
Model and coach the skill. Show how sounds slide together: “Watch my mouth: ‘ssss-t-t-op’. Now you try!”
Step 1: Say, Listen, Find
- SAY the word aloud slowly. Example: “P-p-p-l-l-lug.”
- LISTEN for the blended sound. Example: “/p/ and /l/.”
- FIND the letters that make that blend on the page.
Step 2: Handle Tricky Blends
R-blends (br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr) can be hard because the /r/ changes the vowel sound.
- Tip: Make it playful: “For ‘gr’, get your mouth ready to growl! /grrr/ /grrr/ /ab/.”
